It took about 3 hours to drive up. Nice easy drive from the S.F. bay area through Angel's Camp and Murphy's. Hwy 4 was clear of snow but the side street were mainly iced over at the highest elevation of about 5000 feet so I couldn't get to many of them. The route I took is shown in the following GPS tracks along with a few pictures taken on the road along the way. The temperature ranged from 49F to 45F. I had 5 bar Cingular cell phone service up through Angel's Camp. I think I lost all service through Murphy's and definitively it was gone by the time we got to Arnold.
